A RICHER Holiday Experience for Maree & Peter’s Daughter on Developmental Disabilities Cruise

By Maree & Peter McIntosh · Agent Romario

We have just come back from a cruise to Alaska out of Vancouver. We love our cruises. It's a great holiday because you don't have to think about food, entertainment - you just turn up! You unpack once and just relax. However, this cruise was different. It was on a regular cruise ship, with regular people but we went as part of a Group with Developmental Disabilities. We had a presenter who talked about issues with our kids such as behaviour/communication, sexuality, inclusion in education. This was great because even though I have attended information sessions such as this in the past, my husband has not and this was a great opportunity for him to hear this too.

Apart from the Cruise being a great holiday in itself, i cannot express how great it was travelling with like minded or rather same-situated families. We understood each other without explaining. We had each other's backs, we felt comfortable leaving our kids in the company of someone else without fear of judgement or misunderstandings. It was great eating together and going on port adventures together. We met some lovely people and shared alot in one week.

For Grace, her experience was richer than any other holiday she has had before. She made genuine, ongoing friendships which now gives her the opportunity to continue through social media which means she will improve her verbal and written skills (an added advantage) Not only did she make new friends who have Down syndrome, she made friends with the siblings also. The kids just clicked together as they understand and accept each other. It was a beautiful thing to watch.

The cruise was organised by a travel agent in Canada who herself has a daughter, Whitney who has a dual diagnosis of DS/ASD. She has upcoming cruises on the calendar, one even out of Brisbane! I cannot recommend them highly enough. - Rosalie - Thank you Maree & Peter McIntosh from the Gold Coast, Australia. We so enjoyed meeting and spending time with this lovely family on our Celebrity Alaska Hubbard Glacier Cruise in July, 2016 and look forward to being with them again on another Rosalie’s Developmental Disabilities Cruise.
